Florida enters the 2026-27 season ranked No. 1, and the reason has as much to do with a courtroom in Colorado as anything that happened on a basketball floor.
The latest CBS Sports Preseason Top 25 And 1 has the Gators at the top, followed by Duke, Michigan, Illinois, UConn, Michigan State, Arkansas, Gonzaga, Texas and Arizona. That ranking has already been revised more than a dozen times this offseason, which tells you how chaotic roster construction has been.
The Eligibility Ruling Changed Everything
A federal judge in Colorado granted what amounts to a blanket waiver allowing athletes who graduated high school with the Class of 2022 to receive a fifth year of eligibility. Coaches spent August scrambling to add players who thought their college careers were finished.
The competitive effect is significant and it is not evenly distributed. Programs with the resources to identify, recruit and pay these returning fifth-year players in a compressed window got a meaningful advantage. Programs without that infrastructure watched.
This is now a sport where a late-summer legal ruling can reshuffle the entire top 25. That is where college athletics is in 2026, and pretending otherwise is not useful.
Why Florida Sits at No. 1
The Gators return six of the top seven scorers from a team that won the SEC by three games and earned a No. 1 seed in the 2026 NCAA Tournament. That is the single most important sentence in college basketball right now.
Continuity has become the rarest commodity in the sport. In an era where rosters turn over almost completely every spring, a team bringing back its entire offensive core has a structural advantage in November and December that other contenders simply cannot manufacture.
The gap usually closes by March as new rosters gel. Florida does not have to wait for that.
The Challengers
Duke at No. 2 will do what Duke does, which is reload with elite freshmen and dare everyone to prove that experience matters more than talent. Michigan at No. 3 and Illinois at No. 4 both look loaded, and UConn at No. 5 is never a comfortable draw for anyone.
There is legitimate skepticism worth voicing here. Preseason polls reward name recognition and roster hype, and all four of those teams are carrying significant projection in their rankings. Ask again in January.
What to Watch
Keep an eye on which fifth-year additions actually contribute. Adding a player in August does not mean he fits, and several of these teams are going to spend November figuring out rotations that should have been settled in July.
Also worth watching: Braylon Mullins at UConn and Thomas Haugh at Florida, two high-end returners who pulled out of the 2026 NBA Draft to come back. Both are betting that another college season improves their stock.
Florida earned the top spot. Whether the Gators keep it through a brutal SEC schedule is a different question entirely.
