Aaron Donald is coming back, and the Rams would very much like it to happen Monday night.
Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Los Angeles hopes the un-retired defensive tackle makes his 2026 debut in the Week 2 home opener against the New York Giants. Sean McVay, asked directly whether Donald plays, gave the least committal answer available.
“We haven’t decided that yet,” McVay said. “He’s going to continue to work his process and we’ll see what that looks like.”
That is coach-speak for “probably, but I’m not saying it out loud in September.”
Donald, 35, officially rejoined the Rams on Aug. 30 on a reported one-year deal worth $20 million. He did not travel to Australia for the Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. His roster exemption has since been lifted, which means the only thing standing between him and the field is the coaching staff’s comfort level.
Here is why the urgency is real. Myles Garrett, whom the Rams acquired from Cleveland in a June blockbuster, is on injured reserve after an arthroscopic knee procedure and will not be available until at least Week 6. The entire point of the offseason was to build a defensive front that terrified people. Right now the Rams have neither half of it.
They are also 0-1 after getting run over on the other side of the world.
What Donald actually brings back
This is not a nostalgia signing. Donald is a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year who never came off the field in his prime. He logged a defensive snap rate above 82 percent in each of his final seven seasons, including 90 percent in both 2018 and 2021, and 81 percent in 2023, his last year before walking away.
He has been doing return drills since May and went through at least three separate Rams workouts before signing. Pro Football Rumors reported that Donald had discussed a comeback with McVay before the Garrett trade even happened, and that the trade “created considerable momentum” for the reunion.
Two years off is two years off. Nobody should expect 2018 Aaron Donald in his first game back. What the Rams need is a rotational disruptor who commands a double team, and that version of Donald almost certainly still exists.
The timeline question
If he does not play against the Giants on Monday, Sept. 21 at SoFi Stadium, his next window is Week 3 in Denver. Either way, expect a managed snap count that grows as the season goes.
The smart play for Los Angeles is getting him on the field now, in a controlled role, so that by the time Garrett is healthy in October the two of them have some reps together. Waiting until the Rams are 1-3 and panicking is the worse version of this plan.
McVay knows that. He also knows that rushing a 35-year-old off a two-year layoff into a big workload is how you end up with a soft tissue injury in Week 3.
The Rams entered this season as Super Bowl favorites in a lot of preseason conversations. One bad game in Melbourne does not change the roster’s ceiling, but it did expose how much of that ceiling depends on two pass rushers who have combined for zero snaps.
Monday night is the first real chance to fix half of it.
