Stefon Diggs already cost his team a chance to tie a football game. Now the celebration has a price tag attached.
The NFL fined the Washington Commanders receiver $14,926 for jumping onto the goalpost after his Week 1 touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles. The league listed the offense as unsportsmanlike conduct, specifically “illegal celebrations and vulgar acts.”
The Penalty Was the Expensive Part
The money is not the story. A fine in that range is routine for this category, and Diggs can cover it without checking his account balance.
The flag is the story. Diggs drew a penalty that cost Washington the chance to go for two and tie the Eagles. A celebration turned a live opportunity into a dead one, in a division game, in Week 1.
That is the version of this that should bother the Commanders. The NFL’s fine is a rounding error. The two points were not.
His Explanation Did Not Help
Diggs tried to explain away the penalty afterward and it did not go well. There is no version of “I jumped on the goalpost” that survives contact with a rulebook that has banned exactly that for years.
Players know this rule. Goalpost celebrations have been illegal long enough that using one is a choice, not an accident. Diggs made the choice in a game his team could have tied.
This Is Not New Behavior
Diggs has been fined for over-the-top celebrations before, including during his time in Buffalo. The pattern is established: he is a player who will trade league money for a moment, and mostly that is harmless and occasionally it is entertaining.
The difference this time is that the moment came with a competitive cost. Celebrating hard after a touchdown when your team is down and needs the two-point attempt is the one situation where the fun is not free.
What Washington Should Actually Do About It
Nothing dramatic. Diggs is still a productive receiver and the Commanders did not sign him to be quiet. But somebody in that building needs to make the situational point clearly, because the player who drew this flag is the same player who will be on the field in a one-score game in December.
Celebration penalties are the cheapest mistakes in football to eliminate. They require no additional talent, no scheme change and no extra practice time. They require a receiver deciding that the goalpost can wait until the game is decided.
Diggs has now paid for one. The Commanders paid more.
