Eli Manning waited almost two decades to get an answer, and he got it on live television with his brother sitting next to him.
Kate Hudson joined the Manningcast on Monday night while the Chiefs and Broncos played in the background. At some point Eli decided that was the right moment to litigate a comment she made in 2008.
He pulled up the clip. In it, Hudson calls Tom Brady “handsome” and describes him as the “strapping type,” then labels Manning the “bring home to mom type.”
Eli, deadpan as always, went straight at it.
“So you implied that I’m not handsome or strapping,” he said. “Can I assume that you were just acting right here, right here, this is like one of your great acting moments?”
Hudson had a defense ready
She explained that she was simply trying to differentiate the two quarterbacks who were about to play each other on the biggest stage.
Then she gave Eli what he actually wanted.
“But yes, you don’t bring home to mom someone who’s not handsome, Eli,” Hudson said.
Eli, visibly delighted, accepted the ruling.
Why this works
The Manningcast lives or dies on moments like this. Peyton is the analyst. Eli is the guy who will spend 18 years quietly holding a grudge about a red carpet comment and then produce video evidence during a Week 1 blowout.
Self-deprecating deadpan humor is his entire brand, and it has made him a far better broadcaster than most people expected when the alternate broadcast launched. He does not oversell the joke. He sets it up, delivers it flat, and lets the guest squirm for a second.
It also helps that the underlying premise is funny. Manning beat Brady twice in the Super Bowl. He has two rings to Brady’s seven, and he owns the head-to-head record that matters most to Giants fans. Being the “bring home to mom” guy while holding those trophies is a pretty comfortable position.
The actual game was over early
The football portion of the evening was not competitive. Kansas City beat Denver 31-10 at Arrowhead Stadium behind 173 rushing yards from Kenneth Walker and Patrick Mahomes’ return from a torn ACL.
Which is exactly why the Manningcast exists. When the main broadcast has a three-touchdown game to describe for two hours, the value of the alternate feed goes up.
ESPN has spent years trying to figure out what the second screen is for. Two retired quarterbacks, a celebrity guest and an 18-year-old grudge is a better answer than most.
