The Rays were dismissed in March. They are dismissed every March. Small payroll, constant roster churn, a division stacked with teams that spend four times as much.
Then they held first place for 88 straight days beginning in late June and went 40-19 after July 20. Two full months of being the best team in the league goes well beyond a hot streak.
Kevin Cash kept it simple afterward, saying this group has deserved it all year long and calling it a special group. He has earned the right to sound smug and did not bother.
The No. 1 Seed Actually Matters Here
Tampa Bay skips the Wild Card round entirely. For a team built on pitching depth and matchup management, that extra rest is worth more than it is for most clubs.
Cash gets to line up his rotation exactly how he wants it. He gets to rest the bullpen arms he has leaned on since July. That is a meaningful edge in a five-game series.

The 23-year-old third baseman has turned into one of the most dangerous hitters in the American League and has a real MVP case. He started the All-Star Game at third for the second straight year and won AL Player of the Month in June after slashing .327/.402/.673 with 10 homers and 24 RBIs.
On July 1, at 22, he became the youngest player ever to homer in six consecutive games, passing Ken Griffey Jr. on that list.

New York finished six games back and now has to survive a Wild Card round while Tampa Bay watches. That is a brutal outcome for a team that spent the winter trying to catch this exact opponent.
