The best division race in baseball is happening in the AL Central, and almost nobody outside Cleveland and Chicago is paying attention.
The Guardians sit at 81-75. The White Sox sit at 80-76. Six games left for each of them, and Chicago holds the tiebreaker.
The Tiebreaker Changes Everything
Chicago won the season series 7-6. That means Cleveland cannot finish tied and advance. The Guardians must finish with a better record, full stop.
A one-game lead with a tiebreaker working against you is functionally a half-game lead. Cleveland has no margin at all.
The Schedules Are Not Equal
Cleveland plays three at Boston, then three at Kansas City. Chicago plays three at Kansas City, then three at home against Colorado.
That Boston series is the problem. The Red Sox are locked into their own October positioning and will run out a competitive lineup. Meanwhile, the White Sox close against a Rockies team with nothing to play for, in Chicago.
On paper, the White Sox got the easier road. That is the part that should make Guardians fans nervous.
How Cleveland Got Here
The Guardians were five games under .500 at their low point. Since August 20 they have gone 20-9, tied for the best record in baseball over that stretch, and reclaimed the division with a three-game sweep-flavored series win over Chicago at home.
Chris Antonetti framed it the way front office people always do when they are enjoying themselves. “This is why we play, to play meaningful games in September with a chance to get in October,” the Guardians president said.
There Is More Than a Division Title Here
Cleveland holds a three-game lead for the AL’s No. 2 seed, which comes with a first-round bye. That is the real prize.
The difference between skipping the Wild Card round and playing a best-of-three in early October is worth more than any banner. Ask the Yankees, who are staring down exactly that scenario without Aaron Judge.
FanGraphs gives the Guardians a 97.6 percent chance to reach the postseason and a 62.7 percent chance to win the Central. The playoff berth is close to secure. The division is a coin flip with extra steps.
The Prediction
Cleveland’s pitching has been the best story of the last six weeks, and playoff-caliber pitching travels better than a favorable schedule does. The Guardians take the division by a game, and the White Sox spend the winter thinking about the seven-to-six head-to-head edge they never got to use.
Either way, this is the race that deserves the national window nobody is going to give it.
