Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao were scheduled to fight each other for the second time on September 26, 2026, live on Netflix. That date is today, and there is no fight.
The bout was postponed indefinitely back in June, with a new date to be announced in 2027. Given the ages involved, 2027 is not a promise anyone should count on.
The Setup Was Actually Compelling
This was not being sold as an exhibition. It was a professional fight, meaning Mayweather’s 50-0 record would have been at stake. That distinction matters enormously, because a Mayweather exhibition is entertainment and a Mayweather professional fight is a legacy risk.
Mayweather is 49 years old with a 50-0 record and 27 knockouts. Pacquiao is 47, at 62-8-3 with 39 knockouts. Their first fight in 2015 was the biggest financial event in boxing history and one of the more disappointing nights in the sport, a twelve-round decision that generated enormous revenue and almost no drama.
The Money Was Real
Per a CSI Sports lawsuit, Mayweather’s guaranteed purse was reported at $35 million plus pay-per-view revenue, or a $50 million buyout for non-pay-per-view distribution. Netflix was set to livestream it, following the company’s growing investment in live combat sports.
The venue moved too. It was originally planned for the Sphere in Paradise, Nevada, then shifted to another Las Vegas venue in late April before the whole thing fell apart.
Legal Disputes Killed It
The postponement came down to legal and contractual problems rather than injury or training camp issues. That is the least satisfying way for a fight to collapse, because there is no athletic story to tell and no clear path to fixing it.
When two fighters want to fight and a promotion wants to sell it, injuries get rehabbed and dates get moved. When lawyers are involved, fights die quietly.
Time Is the Undefeated Opponent
Here is the math nobody in the promotion wants to discuss. If this happens in 2027, Mayweather will be 50 or close to it and Pacquiao will be pushing 49. Pacquiao already returned to professional boxing once in his forties.
Every month of delay makes the fight less athletically defensible and more purely financial. The first one in 2015 was criticized for happening five years too late. A 2027 sequel would be happening twelve years after that.
Maybe This Is Fine
There is an argument that boxing dodged something here. A rematch between two fighters in their late forties, sold as a professional bout with an undefeated record on the line, was always going to disappoint the people who paid for it.
The 2015 fight already answered the question. Pacquiao chased, Mayweather counted, and the judges gave it to the better technician. Twelve years later, on a Netflix stream, the answer was not going to change.
Tonight was supposed to be the date. Nobody is missing much.
