Oklahoma went to Athens with a quarterback who was supposed to be the reason the Sooners belonged in the SEC conversation. John Mateer spent the afternoon handing the ball to Georgia.
The final was 41-13. The signature play was a fumble near the goal line that Georgia’s Cole scooped and returned 85 yards the other way, which is roughly a 100-yard swing in a game Oklahoma was already losing.
This Was Not One Bad Play
Mateer got labeled a turnover machine on social media before the game was over, and the label fit. Oklahoma was turnover-plagued from the opening quarter, and against the No. 2 team in the country there is no recovering from that.
Georgia does not need help. Kirby Smart’s defenses have spent a decade converting opponent mistakes into points faster than any program in the sport. Give them short fields and a rattled quarterback and the score gets out of hand quickly.
The Decision to Come Back Looks Different Now
Mateer returned to Oklahoma for 2026 when he could have entered the draft. That call was celebrated in Norman as a sign the program was serious.
Three-quarters of the way through September, it looks more complicated. Mateer has the arm and the legs. He does not have the ball security, and in this conference that gets exposed every single week rather than once a season.
Oklahoma’s schedule does not soften. The Sooners signed up for this when they joined the SEC, and games like Saturday are the cost of that decision when the quarterback play wobbles.
Georgia Is Doing Georgia Things
No. 2 Georgia put up 41 and did it without needing anything unusual from the offense. The defense created the points. The running game finished them. It is the same formula that has produced championships and it does not require a spectacular quarterback.
Smart will spend the week telling everyone his team was sloppy. He says that after every win by four touchdowns.
What Oklahoma Has to Fix
The Sooners need Mateer to stop trying to make the play that wins the game on every snap. He is talented enough to win with boring football against most of this schedule. The problem is that “most” leaves three or four Saturdays where boring is not going to be enough either.
An 85-yard fumble return is the kind of clip that follows a quarterback all season. Mateer has ten weeks to replace it.
The SEC Does Not Forgive
Oklahoma’s move to this conference was always going to produce afternoons like Saturday. The talent gap between the top of the league and everyone else shows up in exactly one place, which is what happens after a mistake.
In the Big 12 a fumble near the goal line costs you three points. In Athens it costs you seven the other way and the game.
The Sooners have the roster to be a top-25 team. They do not yet have the discipline to survive a top-two opponent on the road, and that is a coaching and quarterback issue more than a personnel one.
