The Angels finished 62-100. In 66 seasons of existence, this franchise had never lost 100 games. Now it has.
There is no injury excuse big enough, no bad-luck narrative sturdy enough, and no front-office scapegoat available that changes who is responsible. This is Arte Moreno’s team and has been since 2003.
A Generation of Waste
The Angels employed Mike Trout for his entire prime and made the postseason once. They added Shohei Ohtani and never won a playoff game with him. They have the longest active playoff drought in baseball and just extended it with the worst record the organization has ever produced.
Variance does not explain that. A sustained operating philosophy does, one that treated free agency as a substitute for player development and treated the farm system as a place to raid for rentals that never arrived in October.
The Division Made It Worse
The AL West was historically weak this year. Every team in it finished with a negative run differential. The Astros won the division at .500 or worse, the first time in a full season that has happened.
The Angels could not take advantage of the softest competitive environment they will ever see. In a division where 82 wins took the title, Los Angeles finished 20 games under that line.
There Is a Rebuild Now, Which Is Something
Credit where it is due: the organization finally stopped pretending. The Angels have young pieces worth watching and have begun acting like a team with a plan longer than one offseason.
Zach Neto and Reid Detmers have both shown up on offseason trade candidate lists, which is uncomfortable reading for fans but is also evidence that other clubs see real assets on this roster. That is a start.
The Ownership Question
Moreno tried to sell the team a few years ago and pulled it back. A historic 100-loss season is the kind of ending that makes people wonder whether that decision gets revisited.
Angels fans have watched two of the most talented players of the century put on that uniform and accomplish nothing. A new owner does not guarantee competence. It does guarantee that the person who presided over this is no longer the person making the calls.
Sixty-two wins. The worst in franchise history. Whatever comes next has nowhere to go but up.
What 2027 Has to Look Like
A 100-loss season is only a disaster if nothing changes. Plenty of franchises have used one as the hard reset that finally allowed a real rebuild to start.
The Angels need to keep their young players, trade the veterans who have value, and accept two more years of being bad on purpose rather than bad by accident. That is a different thing entirely, and the organization has never shown the patience for it.
The fans have. They have waited longer than anyone should have to.
