Kansas City is 3-0. That is the headline and that is about all the Chiefs gave anyone Sunday in Miami.
The final was 24-10. Patrick Mahomes posted another multi-score afternoon. The Dolphins never really threatened. It was the kind of win that produces zero highlights and one very satisfied coaching staff.
This Is What Andy Reid Wants in September
The Chiefs have spent the better part of a decade winning ugly on purpose. Kansas City does not need style points in Week 3. It needs a healthy quarterback, a functional run game and a defense that makes a bad offense look exactly as bad as it is.
Miami got all of ten points. De’Von Achane, the one Dolphins player capable of turning a broken play into a 60-yard problem, left the game. Without him, Miami’s offense had no gear above methodical.
Kansas City has now opened 3-0 while looking beatable in each win. That is somehow more concerning for the rest of the AFC than a run of blowouts would be, because it means the ceiling has not been touched yet.
Mahomes Does Not Need to Be Spectacular Anymore
There was a stretch where Mahomes carried Kansas City every single week because the roster required it. That stretch is over. He is playing efficient, conservative football and letting the structure around him do the work, which is precisely how quarterbacks stay upright into January.
Critics will point at the modest numbers and argue he is not the player he was in 2022. That argument keeps running into the same wall. The Chiefs keep winning. Mahomes has never been judged on yards per attempt, and he is not going to start being judged that way now.
Miami Has a Real Problem
The Dolphins built an offense on speed and separation, and it does not function when the speed is unavailable. Achane going down turned Miami into a team that had to win a physical game against Kansas City’s front. That was never happening.
Miami is now looking at an AFC East climb with a quarterback room under pressure and a defense that gave up 24 without ever being embarrassed. Competent is not the same as competitive.
The AFC Picture
Kansas City at 3-0 in a conference where Jacksonville just hung 35 on the best defense in football and Buffalo keeps handling business means the road to the Super Bowl runs through the same places it always has. Nothing about September changed that.
The Chiefs played a forgettable game and took the win home. Twelve more of those and they are exactly where they expect to be.
The Schedule Tightens From Here
Kansas City banked three wins against a manageable opening slate and now runs into the part of the calendar where the margin disappears. That is exactly how Andy Reid has always wanted it, because his teams have historically been sharper in November than September.
The defense deserves more credit than it will get. Holding an NFL offense to ten points on the road is hard regardless of the opponent, and Kansas City has now done it once already this season.
Three and oh with room to improve is the most dangerous position in football, and the Chiefs have lived there before.
