BURNS - Non-contact knee injury in a 12-7 win

Brian Burns Went Down Untouched Against the Titans. The Giants Season Might Have Gone With Him.

The Giants won 12-7 on Sunday. Nobody in the building cared by the time the clock hit zero.

Brian Burns pulled up rushing the passer in the fourth quarter with about eleven minutes left. No contact. Nobody near him. His right knee buckled, he hit the turf with his fist, and he could not put weight on the leg walking off.

He went straight to the locker room rather than the medical tent. That detail tells you what the Giants training staff already suspected.

He Should Not Have Been Out There

Burns sprained his left ankle on Monday night against the Rams. He missed every practice during the short week. He was listed as questionable. The field was wet. New York played him anyway, in a limited pass-rush-only role, in a one-score game against a Titans team going nowhere.

That is a decision the Giants are going to defend all week and a decision that will look worse every day the MRI results sit out there. A second-team All-Pro who put up 16.5 sacks last season and had not missed a game since arriving in 2024 does not need to be on the field on a slick surface eleven minutes into garbage time of a 12-7 grinder.

Kayvon Thibodeaux Just Got a Lot More Valuable

Thibodeaux started Sunday and was already the subject of trade conversations this month, with New York reportedly willing to move him for a second-round pick. That price just went up, or the phone stops ringing entirely, because the Giants cannot trade both edge rushers and pretend to have a defense.

New York’s whole identity this season is the front. The offense lost Jaxson Dart to knee surgery. The receiving corps is patched together. The only reason this team is competitive at all is that it can get to the quarterback.

What Happens Monday

Burns had imaging Sunday night. Non-contact knee injuries in which a player cannot bear weight point in one direction, and every fan base has learned to read the signs. There is a version of this where it is a sprain and he misses a month. There is a version where the season ends in September.

Burns is 28 and has not recorded a sack yet this year. He was going to get there. He is too good not to.

The Giants just won a game they will remember for the wrong reason. Nobody in that locker room was celebrating.

New York Keeps Making the Same Mistake

The Giants have a long recent history of playing hurt players in games that do not require it. Sometimes it works and nobody notices. Sunday is what it looks like when it does not.

A 12-7 win over a Titans team with nothing to play for was never worth the risk of a compromised Burns on a wet field. The coaching staff will say he was cleared and wanted to play, and both of those things will be true, and neither answers the question of why he was out there in the fourth quarter.

Players always want to play. That is what the medical staff and the head coach are there to override.
