PURDY - Two games missed, no designation, back Sunday

Brock Purdy Is Back With No Injury Designation, and the 49ers Need Him Immediately

Brock Purdy is back. The 49ers quarterback carries no injury designation into Sunday’s game against Jacksonville after missing two games with a left shoulder problem and turf toe.

No designation is the key phrase. That is not “questionable,” not “probable,” not a coach hedging on a Friday. That is a team saying the quarterback is healthy and playing.

The Timing Could Not Be Better

San Francisco just lost Nick Bosa to a calf injury for multiple weeks, on top of a defensive line already missing Alfred Collins, Sam Okuayinonu, CJ West and Mykel Williams. The defense is going to give up points it did not give up last year.

Which means the offense has to carry a larger share than Kyle Shanahan planned for. That job is considerably easier with your starting quarterback than without him.

Turf Toe Is the Injury to Watch

The shoulder is the headline, but turf toe is the one that lingers. It is a deceptively serious injury for a quarterback, because it attacks the push-off foot in the throwing motion and the ability to climb the pocket. Players routinely come back from it and then quietly lose velocity and mobility for weeks.

Purdy’s game depends on subtle pocket movement more than arm strength. He wins by sliding off pressure, resetting his base and delivering accurately from platforms that are not clean. Any toe issue that compromises footwork is a direct tax on his best trait.

The absence of a designation suggests the 49ers are confident. It does not mean he is at 100 percent.

What He Walks Back Into

The roster situation is rough. The pass rush is down to Ogbo Okoronkwo and Keion White as the primary edge presence. That likely means more games where San Francisco has to score in the mid-20s rather than win 19-13 while the defense suffocates people.

Shanahan’s offense can absolutely do that, and Purdy has proven he can operate it at a high level. But it requires him to play a full game every week, which puts a spotlight on whether the shoulder and the toe actually hold up under live contact.

The Season Turns Here

San Francisco’s schedule does not care about their injury report. With Bosa out for a stretch and the defensive line in pieces, the 49ers need their quarterback to be the stabilizing force, starting Sunday in Jacksonville.

Two games without Purdy was survivable. A season where he is in and out is not. The 49ers got the answer they wanted on Friday. Now they need it to last.
