Fred Hoiberg just won a recruiting battle Nebraska has never won before.
Dawson Battie, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound power forward from St. Mark’s School of Texas in Dallas, committed to the Cornhuskers on Monday night. He is a senior in the class of 2027 and picked Nebraska over 22 other Division I programs, including Stanford, SMU and Kentucky.
When he signs in November, Battie becomes the highest-ranked recruit in Nebraska men’s basketball history and just the second five-star the program has ever landed.
The rankings say top-25 nationally
The 247Sports Composite has Battie 26th overall in the 2027 class. Rivals is higher, listing him 21st overall and the third-best power forward in the country. Either way, this is a player who should be committing somewhere in the ACC or SEC.
Basketball runs in the family. Battie’s uncle was the fifth overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft.
Nebraska worked this for two years
The Huskers offered Battie in October 2024, a full two years before he committed. He visited Lincoln three times: August 2025, early February 2026 for a game against then-No. 9 Illinois at Pinnacle Bank Arena, and an official visit the weekend of Sept. 18.
That February visit was the kicker. Getting a top-25 recruit into a packed Pinnacle Bank Arena for a ranked Big Ten game is exactly the sell Nebraska could not make five years ago.
Hoiberg earned this
The recruiting win is downstream of what happened on the court. Nebraska won a school-record 28 games last season and picked up the program’s first NCAA Tournament victory on the way to the Sweet 16. Hoiberg was named AP Men’s Basketball National Coach of the Year.
Forward Pryce Sandfort, an All-Big Ten selection, returns after setting the school record with 129 made three-pointers.
Recruits do not commit to potential. They commit to proof, and Nebraska finally has some.
The class is taking shape
Battie joins four-star forward Ty Schlagel, a 6-foot-5 wing from Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul ranked 137th overall, who committed in October 2025.
Nebraska is still chasing four-star forward Ahmad Hudson, ranked 17th in the 2027 basketball class and currently committed to LSU. Hudson is a two-sport prospect, ranked 19th overall nationally and the top tight end in football, which complicates everything.
What this actually means
One commitment does not make Nebraska a blue blood. What it does is prove the ceiling has moved.
Programs break through when a recruit who could go anywhere decides the best version of his career happens somewhere unexpected. Battie had Kentucky on his list and chose Lincoln.
Hoiberg has spent seven years rebuilding this job from a punchline. He just got the recruit that says the rebuild worked.
