Jaxson Dart’s 2026 season is over, and the Giants should be fine with that.
Dart is scheduled for surgery on his injured left knee, a procedure that will almost certainly cost him the rest of the year, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The quarterback suffered damage to his MCL, PCL and meniscus in Monday’s loss to the Rams. The meniscus is the focus of the operation.
The MRI changed everything
Dart went down in the first quarter at SoFi Stadium and the initial read was a sprained MCL, which sounded survivable. Then Tuesday’s MRI landed. The meniscus turned out to be the real problem, and the timeline went from weeks to a full season.
“Fixing the meniscus and MCL will give Jaxson Dart a full recovery. That is the plan,” Rapoport posted.
That sentence is the whole story. New York could have chased a December return with a patch job and hoped the knee held. Instead the organization is taking the version of this that protects a 2025 first-round pick for the next decade.
New York was 1-1 anyway
The frustrating part is what Dart looked like before the injury. In Week 1 he threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns in a win over the Cowboys, and the offense finally looked like something. Dart, Cam Skattebo and Malik Nabers on the field together was the version of this roster the Giants have been promising for two years.
One game. That was the whole sample.
Then came the Rams, a 28-6 beating, and a season that now belongs to Jameis Winston. Winston replaced Dart and went 11-of-27 for 111 yards with an interception and no touchdowns. That is not a bridge. That is a plank.
Harbaugh is stuck with the veteran
John Harbaugh has publicly backed Winston, which is the only thing a head coach can say in September.
“Absolute faith in all our players. That’s why all the guys are here. Jameis is one of our guys who is obviously here for a reason,” Harbaugh told reporters Tuesday. “He’s a very good football player.”
Harbaugh is not wrong that Winston can put up numbers. He is also the same quarterback who has spent a decade turning good afternoons into disasters in the fourth quarter. A full week of first-team reps before the Titans game in Week 3 will help. It will not change who he is.
The real cost is time, not wins
The Giants were not winning a Super Bowl in 2026. What they were doing was finding out whether Dart is the answer, and that question now sits unanswered until next September.
That is the actual damage here. New York spent a first-round pick and an offseason building an offense around a specific quarterback, got one glimpse of it working, and has to wait a full calendar year to see it again.
The surgery is correct. A quarterback with a rebuilt meniscus at 23 is a better asset than a quarterback who rushed back in Week 14 to go 4-4 down the stretch on a bad knee. The Giants made the boring, responsible choice, and for a franchise that has made plenty of the other kind, that counts as progress.
Winston gets the keys. Buckle up.
