Matt LaFleur would not put a timeline on Jayden Reed. That is the part that should worry Green Bay.
Reed was carted off on the second play of the Packers’ Week 2 win over the Jets, was ruled out immediately, and spent the night in a New York hospital. LaFleur confirmed Tuesday that the injury is to Reed’s neck and that the receiver is back in Green Bay.
Asked whether Reed could return this season, LaFleur said it was “way too early” to make any prognostications, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.
Neck injuries do not follow normal rules
A hamstring has a timeline. A high ankle sprain has a timeline. Neck injuries in football have a habit of ending careers quietly.
The comparisons available are not encouraging. Ravens defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike suffered a neck injury in Week 2 of 2025 and has not returned to competitive action. Browns linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah has not played since Week 8 of 2024 and is not expected to resume his career.
A move to injured reserve is considered likely. That is the easy part of this decision.
Green Bay just paid him
Reed signed a three-year, $50.25 million extension in April 2026. The structure is what makes this manageable for the Packers: only $20 million is guaranteed, and all of it has already been paid out through the signing bonus. The rest sits in $5.85 million of per-game roster bonuses across 2027 through 2029.
Green Bay is not carrying dead money into 2028 if this goes badly. That is cold comfort for a 26-year-old receiver in his fourth season.
The production was already missing
Reed had four catches on eight targets for 24 yards through two games. That is not the player who ranked fourth in the NFL with 11.4 yards per target in 2024.
His 2025 was wrecked by a broken clavicle and a Jones fracture in his foot. He landed on IR after two games and did not return until December. Two straight seasons interrupted before October is a pattern, not bad luck.
Who picks up the slack
Christian Watson and Matthew Golden have carried the receiving room so far, and Skyy Moore saw a clear uptick in snaps after Reed went down. That group can function.
The bigger issue is that Green Bay is stacking injuries. The Packers also lost right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele to season-ending knee surgery, announced Tuesday. Micah Parsons is still on IR working back from a 2025 ACL tear.
At 1-1, none of this is fatal. But LaFleur’s refusal to speculate on Reed was not caution for its own sake. When a coach will not give you a range, the range is bad.
