Luka Doncic is not interested in easing into the season. Ahead of Lakers training camp he made his priority about as clear as an athlete can make it: he will not rest until the team wins more championships.
He also said he is honored and grateful to get the chance to write his own championship chapters in Los Angeles. That is a man who understands exactly which franchise he plays for.
The Numbers Back the Confidence
Since arriving in the February 2025 trade, Doncic has averaged 31.9 points, 8.1 assists and 7.8 rebounds across 92 games as a Laker. Those are MVP-shaped numbers over more than a full season’s worth of games.
The two-time scoring champion has not had a transition period. He stepped off the plane and immediately became the most productive scorer on the roster.
The Drought Is the Whole Point
Los Angeles has not won since 2020. Six years. For most franchises that is a rough patch. For the Lakers it is a crisis that gets discussed on local radio every single day.
Doncic knows this. His comments about writing championship chapters were not casual. He is measuring himself against the banners, which is the only measuring stick that has ever worked in that building.
The Roster Question Nobody Wants to Ask
Here is the tension. LeBron James is gone, off to Philadelphia on a two-year deal. The Lakers are now Doncic’s team alongside Austin Reaves, which is exactly what Doncic wanted and also a much thinner supporting cast than the one that surrounded him last season.
The Western Conference did not get easier. San Antonio and Oklahoma City are the favorites after meeting in last season’s Conference Finals. Denver is still Denver. Minnesota added LaMelo Ball.
Doncic is going to have to be transcendent, not just excellent.
Why I Believe Him Anyway
Doncic has never been a player who says the right thing for public consumption. When he is annoyed, everyone knows. When he is locked in, everyone knows that too.
The version of him that showed up after the trade played with something to prove, and it produced 31.9 points a night. The version that shows up this fall is playing for a title without LeBron as a shield or a co-star.
That is the setup that has historically brought the best out of him. He carried Dallas to the Finals in 2024 as the unquestioned top option.
The Bar Is Set
He said it himself. No rest until there are more championships. Lakers fans have heard bigger promises from smaller players.
This one is worth taking seriously.
