Training camps are opening and the Eastern Conference has turned into something nobody would have drawn up two years ago. Houston got started September 23. Dallas goes Saturday. Detroit, New York and Orlando open Monday, with 23 teams starting Tuesday and Cleveland on Wednesday.
Then the games start, and the East becomes the most interesting division of labor in the sport.
The Knicks Are Defending a Title Nobody Expected
New York won it. That sentence still reads strangely, and now they have to defend it against a conference that spent the summer rebuilding itself specifically to beat them.
Defending champions rarely get an easier path. The Knicks are getting a considerably harder one.
Philadelphia Assembled Something Absurd
The 76ers now have LeBron James and Jaylen Brown alongside Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid. On paper that is as much offensive talent as any roster in the league.
LeBron signed a two-year, $8 million deal, which tells you everything about what he is chasing at this stage. He took a fraction of his market value to play for a team he believes can win now.
The question is health. Embiid’s availability has decided Philadelphia’s ceiling for five straight years, and no amount of star power around him changes that math.
Giannis to Miami, Kawhi to Toronto
The Heat added Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Raptors got Kawhi Leonard back. Both moves would have been the story of any other offseason and both got buried under the LeBron news.
Miami with Giannis is immediately a problem for anyone hoping to walk through the East. Toronto with a healthy Kawhi is the kind of wild card that ruins a bracket.
Cleveland and Boston are still there. This conference has six teams that could plausibly reach the Finals.
The West Is a Two-Team Race Until Proven Otherwise
San Antonio and Oklahoma City met in last season’s Conference Finals and both return as favorites. The Spurs added Tobias Harris to an already dangerous core.
The Thunder kept their 2025 championship foundation intact despite financially driven cuts that cost them Lu Dort, Aaron Wiggins and Isaiah Joe. That is the tax bill coming due for a team that drafted brilliantly.
Denver, Minnesota with LaMelo Ball, and the Lakers with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are the teams positioned to crash it.
One Contract Situation to Watch
Detroit enters camp with Jalen Duren’s restricted free agency still unsettled. That is not a small distraction for a team trying to take a step forward.
The Prediction
Philadelphia has the most talent in the East and the least certainty. Miami has the best player in the conference now. New York has the ring and the chip on the shoulder that comes with everyone picking against you.
Take the Knicks. Teams that win it and get disrespected all summer tend to be insufferable in a useful way.
