COLLINS. Hamstring puts Week 2 in jeopardy

Nico Collins Injury Update: Texans WR’s Hamstring Puts Week 2 vs. Bengals in Jeopardy

The Texans got exactly the injury news they could not afford. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Nico Collins was a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice with a hamstring issue and that his status for Sunday against the Bengals is in jeopardy.

Collins met with team doctors after practice, and the encouraging part is that they do not believe the injury is serious. Hamstrings tend to ignore that distinction in September. Players who push through a tweak in Week 2 often miss all of October.

What Houston loses without him

Collins is 27, a two-time Pro Bowler and the gravitational center of this passing game. In the 36-31 Week 1 loss to Buffalo he led the Texans with seven catches for 75 yards and a touchdown on 10 targets, and that came on a day the offense scored plenty and still lost.

Over his previous three seasons he piled up 219 receptions, 3,420 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns, clearing 1,000 yards every year. Receivers at that level do not get replaced by committee. They get replaced by a worse version of the whole offense.

If he sits, the targets shift to second-year man Jaylin Noel and tight end Dalton Schultz. Noel has the tools to be a real weapon down the road. Schultz is a dependable chain-mover who has never been asked to carry a passing game. Neither changes how a defensive coordinator builds his Sunday plan the way Collins does.

The math on 0-2

Houston is trying not to start 0-2, and Cincinnati is not a soft landing spot. An 0-2 hole is not fatal, but it takes most of October to climb out of, and this roster does not have the schedule cushion to treat September as a warmup.

The Week 1 loss was the kind that lingers. Josh Allen hit Joshua Palmer for a 34-yard touchdown with 1:36 left to flip it, and Houston put up 31 points and still walked off the field beaten. The offense held up its end. The finish did not.

Repeating that performance without the best receiver on the roster is a much taller ask.

Our take: sit him

If there is any real doubt Sunday morning, the Texans should hold Collins out. A soft hamstring that gets pushed in Week 2 becomes a four-week absence by Week 5, and Houston’s season is not decided in September.

That is easier to type than it is to do when you are staring down 0-2 with a division race already moving. But this roster was assembled around Collins as the one receiver opponents have to account for on every snap, and there is no version of this season that works if he is compromised in November.

Watch Thursday’s practice report closely. Limited again means he plays on a snap count. Full participation means he is fine and this was a scare. A did-not-participate means Houston makes the right call, whether it wants to or not.
