MAHOMES - Back from torn ACL, Chiefs roll

Patrick Mahomes Returns From Torn ACL in Chiefs Win: ‘This Is Just the Start’

Nine months ago Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL. Monday night he ran 15 yards into the end zone for the first touchdown of the Chiefs’ season.

Mahomes made it through his first full game since December in Kansas City’s 31-10 win over Denver, and the fact that he finished it healthy mattered more than anything in the box score. The two-time MVP went 15-of-27 for 184 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

“Want to give all glory and thanks to God! Letting me be out there doing what i love again! ChiefsKingdom this is just the start see yall next week!” Mahomes posted on X after the game.

The Scramble Was the Whole Story

Forget the passing line for a minute. The moment that mattered came when Mahomes took off and scrambled 15 yards for a touchdown, planting and cutting on a knee that was surgically reconstructed less than a year ago.

Quarterbacks coming back from ACL reconstruction almost always look tentative in the pocket first. They hold the ball an extra beat, they slide early, they avoid contact in ways they never used to. Mahomes ran into the end zone in the first quarter of his first game back.

That is the psychological hurdle, and he cleared it immediately. Everything else can be rebuilt with reps.

He Was Rusty, and That Is Fine

Fifteen completions on 27 attempts is not a Mahomes stat line. He missed throws he normally makes and the interception was avoidable. That is exactly what nine months away does to timing, and it will clean up over the next three or four weeks.

The Chiefs also did not need him to be great, which was the design. Kenneth Walker III ran for 173 yards and scored twice, giving Kansas City the kind of ground game that lets a quarterback ease back in rather than sling it 45 times.

That is the version of the Chiefs that should frighten the AFC. The old formula asked Mahomes to be a superhero every week. This one asks him to be efficient while a $45 million running back does the heavy lifting.

The Timeline Was Absurd When He Set It

Mahomes underwent surgery nine months ago and immediately targeted Week 1 of the 2026 season as his return. Most people around the league treated that as optimistic athlete talk. Torn ACL plus torn LCL is a serious combination, and the LCL is often the part that extends recovery.

He hit the date anyway. That is a genuine testament to the rehab work, and the three-time Super Bowl champion made a point of thanking everyone who got him there.

Kansas City faces Indianapolis at Arrowhead on Sunday looking for 2-0. If Mahomes looks sharper than he did in Week 1, and he probably will, the rest of the conference has a very familiar problem again.
